Slowly changing dimensions scare people because the names sound like airport codes. We rewrote the story around a vendor changing bank details twice in one quarter.
Each pattern gets a plain-language consequence: what history you keep, what breaks downstream, and what your analysts must remember when they filter.
The middle section compares two implementations in PostgreSQL with the same outcome but different audit trails, so engineers can pick deliberately.
